Background in 60 seconds

written 4 Oct

The standoff centers on the United States and Israel, Iran, and Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen over two oil chokepoints. Washington and its ally aim to degrade Iran's nuclear and military capacity and keep shipping moving; Tehran uses control of the Strait of Hormuz to deter attacks and extract concessions; the Houthis press the Red Sea front. It sharpened after a U.S.-Israeli operation in late February 2026 struck Iranian nuclear, military and leadership sites, after which Iran restricted Hormuz. The strait carries 20 million barrels a day — a fifth of world oil and LNG — far more than pipeline bypasses can replace, so disruption lifts energy and freight costs. Saudi Arabia's Red Sea pipeline workaround is vulnerable to Houthi attacks.
